PL3 v Kalamunda

UWA 12 v Kalamunda 1

22/01/12 - When I showed up for the game this morning, I was looking down the barrel of fielding only 7 players with an important game ahead of us in terms of top four placings. Fortunately Mr Macca stepped in to help us out and Matt Fouhay played with an injury. Things looked bad early in the game when Kalamunda loaded the bases with only one out but Nick turned a double and we got out of the innings with Kalamunda putting up a big duck egg (0).

We jumped out of the blocks with a number of good hits and walks and put 2 runs on the board to put the young Kalamunda pitcher under pressure. Kalamunda's second innings followed from there first with them getting loaded bases again but with no outs. Fortunately Goose struck the next batter out and Gazia then turned another double to sit them down again with no runs scored.

This surely was frustrating the opposition. We then followed on from our first inning with more solid hitting and base running to allow us to put another 2 runs on the board to jump out to a 4-0 lead. From this point on Goose only pitched stronger and stronger, proving to be very difficult for any Kalamunda player to hit allowing us to sit them down for two more innings with no runs on the board, while we scored another 6 runs to take the game by the throat.

In the last innings Kalamunda managed to score their one and only run and we ran out he game, winning by a margin of 12-1. All in all a fantastic effort with everyone contributing either with the bat or in the field.

Great job Gents

PL3 v Eastern Hills

UWA 7 v Eastern Hills 3

15/01/12 - In the two previous games between UWA and EH, there was no separating the teams with two draws being the result. With only a handful of games until the finals and with both teams currently fighting for playoff positions, the game was going to be incredibly important.

On the back of a great first innings on the mound by Goose and great work in the batting the box we had loaded bases with no outs, unfortunately we were only able to put one run on the board though. The second innings came and went quite quickly with both pitchers sitting down the batters. The third innings saw both teams put a run on the board which left us one up after 3 innings and playing some solid if not great ball.

In the fourth inning both teams stepped up in the box and 2 runs were put on the scoreboard by both teams leaving UWA 1 run ahead with time for one more inning. Fortunately Goose continued to pitch fantastically and was backed up by some solid work in the infield and we were able to sit Eastern Hills down with us still leading by 1 and only 12 minutes left on the clock in which to bat out.

We took full advantage of Eastern Hills having to change pitchers after there starter reached his pitch count and we put three more runs on the board of some solid hitting. Great performances by Goose pitching a solid 5 innings game and going 2 for 2, Myself hitting 3 for 3 and Todd Oxnam going 2 for 3 in his best batting performance of the season.

Its time to now make a solid run into the finals and try to get that number 2 spot for the double chance.

PL3 v Kelmscott

UWA 4 v Kelmscott 3

11/12/11 - Unlike the last meeting between these teams that saw 31 runs put on the board, this game was a low scoring affair. Both teams had men in scoring positions in each of the first three innings without being able to put any runs on the board.
<br/ Our batting was solid from the start however our fielding looked shaky at times except for a double play pulled of by Nick via a catch and put out at first. After the 3rd innings our fielding picked up with us eventually picking up 3 double plays and a couple of solid catches in the outfield including a collision catch by Todd at right.<br/
Unfortunately Kelmscott where able to put two runs on the board on the middle part of the match and held there lead for a couple of innings until we were able to match them with 2 of our own. Kelmscott then hit the lead again and then sat us down in order. Fortunately there was just enough time for one more innings which Goose worked through quickly and holding Kelmscott to a tenuous 1 run lead.

In the bottom of the last innings we were able get the lead runner on who eventually scored leaving us equal on runs and Goose to 2nd. I laid down a bunt to advance Goose for the first out which gave us the winning run at 3rd and one out. We then lost our next batter leaving us with 2 down and Gazia at the plate. Gazia was then hit by the 2nd pitch which brought Ben up to the plate who had struggled in the box all day. Ben was able to get bat on ball though with his 3rd pitch and hit it straight to 2nd base who muffed the play letting Goose score and giving us the win.

All in all a great result and well deserved against an until then undefeated Kelmscott. We now get to take them on again next week at their home ground and a win will put us back in the hunt for a top two finish. Well done boys all round.

Coach Jug

PL3 v Eastern Hills

UWA 5 v Eastern Hills 5

20/11/11 - For the second time this season we had the pleasure of driving out to the country to play the Eastern Hills Hornets, a team that has improved greatly this season which would ensure that the game would be hard fought. Dave Stivey made his debut on the mound for us and did a fantastic job holding Eastern Hills to just 5 runs. Unfortunately we made a couple of errors in the field again which cost us a couple of un earned runs and therefore the win in the end. Our batting was again quite good with us getting plenty of base runners on and in the most part moving them around. Simon Gazia planted the first bomb for the PL3's this season with a monster to left field and Tim Stivey almost repeated the feat with a triple through the goal posts (i think he is still lying out at third base). Tod Oxnam stepped up to take 3 solid catches in left and was also thrown out of the batting box for throwing a bat (accidentally) at the umpire. Then he almost repeated the action in his next at bat. Once again we played a solid game and had our chances to get the win but will have to settle with a draw. This leaves us in 3rd place on the table (somewhere we are unfamiliar with over the last 2 seasons) and in position to have a shot at the top two and the double chance in the finals. Good job boys and bring on Kalamunda next week on another road trip.

PL3 v Kelmscott

UWA v Kelmscott

13/11/11 - Driving down to play at Kelmscott is not fun at the best of times, but when you only end up with 7 players it doesn't help. Huge thanks to Tony who stepped in to ensure that we at least had 2 outfielders and allow to play with 8 for the entire game. Considering we were down a players and playing the top team we put in a fantastic performance going down by a couple of runs. Our batting was fantastic across the board with all players getting on base a number of times. our base running was also fantastic setting up many scoring opportunities. Unfortunately lapses in fielding again hurt us at times allowing Kelmscott to score a number of unearned runs, having myself as catcher also accounted for a number of unearned runs due to pass balls (sorry Goose). Goose put in a fantastic performance on the mound and kept us in the game for the entire time. Gards and Shanas slotted back into the team like they had, had no time of and will be a great addition to the team through the season. Eastern Hills again next week and if we put in the same performance with a full team we are sure to put another win on the board.

PL3 v Willetton

UWA 13 v Willetton 5

06/11/11 - Managing to just scrape together a team on Sat night (thanks Stivey) we fronted up for our game against Willetton not really knowing how things would go. Willetton no longer had a PL2 team and we all assumed that the players would have strengthened the 3's team. However that was not the case. We jumped all over their pitcher in the first innings, both with the bat and stealing bases on will to put up 5 runs.

Kaz then took the mound and although struggled at times with control did manage to get us out of the first with a 2 run lead. The second and third innings were somewhat uneventfull as we struggled to hold back when batting with the Willetton pitcher throwing B.P. Kaz threw two good innings only allowing 1 more run to make the game close at 5-4.

Tim caught a great game behind the plate throwing out 2 base stealers and being extremely (it was out) on a third runner. Jeremy Faux turned a great double play at third and we moved on to the 4th. In the fourth our bats returned and we were able to put up another 4 runs to give us a comfortable lead that we held through to the end for a good win.

Stand out performances on the day came from Andrew who went 4-4 and Tim Stivey behind the plate. We are back in the hunt for second place, however with Kelmscott again this week who are the team to catch, we need to be on our best game.

PL3 v Carine Cats

UWA 3 v Carine Cats 6

30/10/11 - This match turned out to be a milestone match for one of the Carine players which resulted in them dropping a number of PL1 players to try and secure a win for the occasion. As one of those players dropped was the pitcher it was going to make for a difficult game especially for those new players to the club who now had to face a much faster pitcher than anything they had faced before. Having said that, we started of well by scoring 2 runs in the first and holding Carine for two innings.

Unfortunately though our fielding was found wanting in the middle innings which allowed Carine to put 3 runs on us is in back to back innings with only one of them being earned. Al did a sensational job from the mound in his first game of the season and Bali was fantastic behind the plate, also in his first game. Our batting was ok considering the opposition with many of the team getting bat on ball however many of those hits did not get through the infield.

I imagine that next time we play Carine the team will be vastly different and with a better fielding performance we will give them a better run.

PL3 v Kalamunda

UWA 17 v Kalamunda 2

23/10/11 - The PL3's picked up there first W for the season on the weekend against Kalamunda behind the fantastic performance of the Pascoe brothers on the plate and at the dish. Ben threw a fantastic game, shutting down Kalamunda's offence and the bats came out to play when we had our turn at the plate. Most if not all of the team managed to get at least a hit or walk which allowed us to put a lot of pressure on the young Kalamunda pitchers and resulted in many pass balls and stolen basses. All around a great performance from the team and shows that we will be a force to contend with again this season. Thanks should also go to Tony who helped out coaching from 3rd base and giving advice to many of the new players, it was greatly apreciated by all.

PL3 v Eastern Hills

UWA 10 v Eastern Hills 10

16/10/11 - The team jumped out to a great start against Eastern Hills scoring 4 runs in the first innings and holding Eastern Hills scoreless. The third inning provided us with another 4 runs on the back of some clutch hitting and solid base running.

There were a number of great at bats with the opposing pitcher struggling to hit his targets with the strong winds. Jeremy Faux pitched a great match to Tim Stivey however we again did not back up our pitcher in the field making a couple of costly errors especialy in the 4th and 5th inning which allowed Eastern Hills to bridge the gap and finally draw the game in the 5th inning.

Unfortunately we had no back up pitcher to go to to finish of the game when Jeremy was starting to struggle in the heat and high winds. All in all a good game allowing a number of the new players to the club, a chance to get some time in the field and at the plate.

PL3 v Kelmscott

UWA 2 v Kelmscott 18

09/10/11 - We went into the first game of the season with 5 of our premiership winning teammates unavailable and one retirement (Porter). This therefore gave a number of new players to the club the opportunity to step up and show what they could do. Kelmscott proved to be a strong team this year with many of the players from higher divisions dropping down. In the field we struggled making a number of errors which made it hard on Goose on the mound who had to pitch for close to an hour in the second innings. At this stage the game was well and truly over however most of the team showed fight by getting hits or at least bat on ball in the box. All in all a disappointing start to the season going down 18 – 2 however the experience in the field and at the plate will hold us in good stead later in the season.
