UWA v CUR 11-13

10/01 Round 11 This was a must win game for UWA PL baseball team. Not only to start the off the second half of the season with a win but also to jump into the top 4. This was an old fashion slugfest with both pitchers struggling to find the strike zone and resulted in BB's and hits. Torpy was relived in the 4th by Goldman as UWA were trailing 10 to 8. The pitching change slowed down Curtin's run flow but UWA were unable to make up the differencegoing down 13 to 11. Next week UWA will have to play9 innings of solid baseball if they are to beat Balcatta. Next week is a must win game if UWA are any chance to make the finals.

UWA v CAR GAME 2 8-3

20/12 Round 10 Game 2 started the same as Game 1 finished with CAR scoring two in the 1st with consecative home runs off UWA's Al Reid; Ben Pascoe responded for UWA with a solo HR. UWA tied it up in the 4th but CAR added two with another solo HR and a run on errors for a 4-2 lead. CAR scored in the 5th with a 2 R HR and Reid was replaced by Adam Barrell who also gave up a solo shot to give CAR 5 HRs and a 7-2 lead.
CAR scored again in the 6th; Barrell then held CAR scoreless for the remainder of the game while UWA struggled with scattered hits off CARs Daniel Hayes adding another run in the 8th for a 8-3 loss.

It was great to see Al Reid on the mound again after several years away. Al showed some of that old side arm magic only giving up 5 hits but unfortunately 4 were HRs. Similarly Barrell's impromptue return to the mound was a kiné to being "thrown to the wolves" but turned out to be entertaining and a fine display of one legged pitching. Pascoe 1-3 HR, Goldman 3-3, Major 2-4. Reid 4.1IP 5H 2SO 6R 5ER. Barrell 4.2 IP 6H 3SO 2R 1ER.

A dissapointing day for UWA with few highlights for the home team against a "Red Hot" Carine offense .... That's Baseball !

Credit to CAR for a resounding come from behind win. Torpy 1-2 (HR) 3 rbis. Major 3-4, Stillitano 2-4. Goldman 6IP 9H 4SO 5R 3ER,

UWA v KAL 10-3

13/12 Round 9 After a good win last week UWA where expected to maintain the same intensity against Kalamunda at home. KAL had come to play scoring 2 runs off 3 hits in the first off starter Pete Torpy while UWA responded with one run.

A change in tactics saw KAL struggle to score while UWA continued to add on runs incl a solo home run by Justin Stillitano in the 4th. KAL with some heads up defense kept themselves in the game while UWA were some what pedestrian at the plate compiling a 6-3 lead after 7 inns. UWA awoke in the 8th with a leadoff double by Adam Barrell followed by consecutive home runs by Neil Major, Pete Torpy and Harrison Taylor for a 10-3 lead.

UWA again fell in to old habits with a lack of intensity at the plate, although the defense was solid incl Matt Goldman covering a lot of ground in CF and Brendan Buckley taking the catch of the season in foul ground in LF. Scott Barrell's 8 game hitting streek came to an end while Ben Pascoe cont his form with the bat with 2-4 (dbl) and Neil Major 3-4 (HR). Pete Torpy 8IP 8H 9SO 3R 1ER. Other highlights incl the long awaited appearance of Travis Ottey on the mound with an impressive scorless inns. in the 9th. and the return of Adam Barrell off the bench in the 8th after a season long injury.

UWA will need to improve on that performance with a double header against Carine next week.

UWA v CAR 6-4

6/12 Round 8 Apparently a week can be a long time in baseball. After a big loss to 2nd place ROC last week UWA were presented with the task of facing League Leaders Carine away.

Leading CAR pitcher James Hookway looked settled in the first and Matt Goldman making his third start for the season gave up one unearned run for a 0-1 score line. Both pitchers dominated through to the 6th with Goldman allowing only one hit and UWA managing only 2. for an unchanged score.

A leadoff hit by Stillo in the 6th with a sac bunt by Pascoe sparked a 5 hit innings and 3 runs. Carine responded with a run with UWA now leading 3-2.
A walk and 2 doubles scored another run in the 7th resulting in CAR making a pitching change. UWA again scored in the 8th while CAR picked up 2.
Goldman closed it out in the 9th for a well deserved win.

UWA again showed they can get hits off quality pitching but were able on this occassion to string some together, something that has alluded them all season. Will this be the game that sparks UWA into reacing their full potential?

Goldman 9IP 7H 14 K2 0 BB 4R 3ER. Stillo and Scott 3-4, Torpy 2-5 (2dbl) 3 rbi, Benny 2-4 (dbl). Harrison 2 outfield assists.

UWA v ROC 3-13

29/11 Round 7 Despite being down Neil Major and Justin Stillitano UWA thought they were some sort of chance against an undermanned Rockingham.
Andy McDonough started on the hill and pitched well keeping UWA in the game with a 3-4 score line after 4 inns despite 2 errors.

The wheels fell off for UWA in the 5th and Andy was relieved by Pete Torpy after ROC scored on 2 errors and went on to score another 2 runs to take a commanding 7-3 lead. Torpy gave up 2 more runs in the 6th . Andy again came on in the 7th with the game getting away giving up 5 runs for ROC to take a deserved 14-3 mercy rule.

ROC import Jacob Eckley was dominant throwing a clever game keeping UWA to 8 scattered hits 11 SO and 1 BB.

UWA’s inability to string together hits and 6 errors was never going to keep them in the game against quality pitching. They have shown they can get hits from the top pitchers in the League but need to maintain pressure and remain focussed for the entire game.

There were however many positives with Brendan Buckley and Harrison Taylor 1-3 rbi (dbl) having strong defensive games in the outfield, Torpy 2-3 2rbi (dbl), Benny 2-4 at the top of the line up and Scott Barrell continuing his hot form with 3-3 (dbl).

UWA v KEL 34-5

22/11 Round 6 After Kelmscott’s 2 run loss to Balcatta the previous week UWA anticipated a tough game.
KEL were off their game and with what appeared to be some sluggish arms UWA amassed 25 hits despite KEL’s 5 pitching changes with all players contributing with the bat.

Highlights: Matt Goldman had his second start for the season and with good command of his pitches gave up 5 hits 5R 0ER plus 3-7 (2 dbl, tpl). Harrison Taylor experienced the wide open spaces at KEL with an in the park home run.

Box Score

UWA v EH 8-6

15/11 Round 5 Control of the strike zone was to determine the outcome of UWA’s clash with Eastern Hills and their hard throwing left handed import.

EH started well with 2 runs in the 1st off a hit and an error while EH’s TJ Wohlever dominated with the first of his 15 strikeouts.

Torpy struggled for control in the 3rd giving up 3 runs off 3H and 3BB for EH to take what appeared to be a commanding 5-0 lead with TJ in control.

UWA’s discipline and patience at the plate was to be rewarded in the 4th with a leadoff error a hit and a 2R HR by Scott Barrell to put UWA back in it 3-5. TJ’s control went missing in the 6th with 2H 6BB allowing UWA to pick up 5 valuable runs for a 8-5 lead.

Both pitchers again dominated for the rest of the game with Torpy only conceding one run after the 3rd supported by good defense for a valued 8-6 win.

8/11 Round 4 Balcatta and UWA Baseball Clubs both entered their clash on Sunday with their import pitchers taking the mound. UWA started well with 2 runs in the 1st inn. with BAL coming back to tie the game 2 all after 3 inns.
UWA’s starter Matt Goldman was traveling well until an error in the 4th led to BAL scoring 6 R 1 ER to take an 8-2 lead that was going to be difficult to overcome with BAL’s Brent Zarney getting stronger with every innings.
UWA continued to get hits but were unable to string them together while BAL’s defense kept shutting them down with 2 well executed double plays. BAL sealed the game with two solo home runs in the 6th for a well deserved 10-4 win for their club.

Goldman will have learned a lot from the outing while relief pitcher Neil Major again showed his worth with 2.2 scoreless innings.
BAL 10r 10h 1e. UWA 4r 13h 2e.

UWA v KAL 20-8

1/11 Round 3 After a little team get together before the game, we made our way down to the field to take on a dangerous Kalamunda team. When we came out to score 4 runs in the top of the first, it looked like we werent going to show any murcey. Kalamunda quickly repsonded with 3 in the bottom of the first. Now it seemed like high scoring game as we scored 3 in the top of the 2nd and Kalumanda scoring another run to make it 7 - 4. the game stayed tight as the Rangers scored another 3 in the 4th to tie it all up. The boys needed a little wake up call and it came in teh top of the 7th! 12 runs!!! The high light of this inning was a Grand Slam from Chris Wescombe. Was a very good team effort winning the game 20-8. Another highlight was Major coming in to get the win and also picking up 6 hits from 6 at bats - a massive home run and also 5 RBI's.

UWA v CUR 18-9

25/10 Round 2 Well what a day at the office! With the game going almost 4 hours! I was very happy to see that we made the appropriate adjustments this week as we scored in every inning except for the 8th! Some stand out performances was defiantly Scott Barrell behind the dish. An excellent effort in the heat and also for how long he lasted behind the dish, he also went 3 for 3 with 3 BB's. Stillo has settled in to the lead off spot with a 3 hit game and 3 RBI's, Major picking up 3 hits. Harrison still providing a lot of spark in the 5 spot picking up 3 hits also. With a young looking line-up we are definitely taking the right steps forward! We welcome back Matt Goldman and Benny Pascoe for this weeks game against Kalamunda.

UWA v ROC 4-11

18/10 Round 1 Well a tough start to the season with our rivals Rockingham coming ready to play. We started well with a run in the bottom of the 1st but the missed chance to score more urns in that inning. Harrison Taylor making his UWA debut on the mound was a little shaky with his accuracy throughout his outing giving up runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th innings. Our biggest problem was that our heads weren't in the game and which meant we were not able to mentally make adjustments in the batters box. Our usual steady defence was lacking with 4 errors for the game.

Matt Goldman also making his debut stared with the bat going 2-5 with a double and Harrison also chipped in with a 3 run home run in the 8th. Justin Stillitano was steady in the leadoff spot and has some great at bats. Defiantly not panic stations as the boys are disappointed with the loss and will look for a big weekend coming against Curtin.

In 1993, in what should have been the dying days of the Labor Government, John Hewson and the Opposition front bench taunted Keating for not having the courage to go to the polls early and put his government out of the nation's collective misery. Keating responded with the taunt that he "wanted do you slowly!" And sometimes it is those victories where you are not given a chance which taste the sweetest of all

Always a danger game after the mouse racing night. There was one withdrawal just before game time when I got a message Brittany was in hospital. We started slowly and trailled until the sixth when we tied the game and then finally got ahead in the seventh. Player of the game goes to Claire for her 2 hits from 3 at bats which has elevated her up the batting table with a .500 OBP.

B1 Women's Softball UWA 23 Morley 4

Taking on the bottom-placed Morley, it looks as though we had solid pitching from Fiona and Anne and good batting just about all around. It certainly seems to have been a day to boost batting stats. Player of the game goes to Caitlin for her 4 hits and a walk. Special mention to two others who didn't get out for the day - Kelli with 2 hits and 3 walks and Anne with 4 walks. Thanks to Bobbie for coaching on the day.

Our story begins in ancient greece on a cool summers eve... (Big Bang Theory fans will appreciate this line the rest of you should become Big Bang Theory fans) naught but 10 of our brave warriors survived the horrible tradgedy of mouse racing night (Great night btw thanks to all involved) and made it to the ground relatively unscathed... Dave's car however had some spew added to the paint work I hear =D
