UWA 1-2

There was a strange mood about the team come Saturday’s game, many girls claimed to “be struggling to get pumped”. Something just wasn’t right. Like every good sports write up, honesty is the key! (Sometimes the truth is stretched but hey that’s what makes it interesting) The UWA girls where first to bat and things seemed to be going well when lead off batter Ellice made it on bag, even though she hit what looked like a sacrifice fly when no runners were on bag. Then coach jess put a bunt call on short stop/ number 2 batter Meg, who had unfortunately missed the previous bunting training session where coach jess had her girls bunting off a pitching machine set at 100 plus kph. A caught bunt mixed with a 12 step lead off from Ellice equaled a double play which didn’t start the game off to well for the UWA girls.

The field looked somewhat different today with pitcher jess playing catcher and season catcher Tenielle out in right field due to a possible fracture in her left wrist. (Caused by the pitching machine at the previous training) New comer Bobby was put on the mound in her first game playing the number 1 position for the side. Bobby pitched well though out her innings on the mound, chucking some very good looking pies, giving the girls opportunities to show off their skills in the field, however the mixture of over throws, and dropped catches saw these opportunities pass themselves by. A conversation caught on tape from the dug out heard, “we’re just lulling them into a false sense of security girls”, this statement has led to a serious investigation into the team’s tactical coach’s intentions. The lulling had the UWA girls 2 runs behind, with only a couple of innings to catch up.. Jess made play of the day when she chucked a ball to second to make a much needed out, unfortunately the weather had jess hallucinating, as there was no fielder on the bag just yet allowing the ball to roll through to center fielder ash. After Ash preformed a little “oh yeh, I got to touch the ball dance”, the runner looked as though she was going to round three and head home. This caused the look on ash’s face to turn from a smile to a stern look emanating “bring it on”!! The fielder hesitated but then started the long sprint home. Ash pulled out a can of spinach from her pocket, took it all in one gulp, gave a toot, wound up her arm and chucked one monster of a throw from out field to home beating the runner with time to spare!

Suddenly the wind changed direction and the UWA side was looking its best once again. Amy in left right out took numerous catches, and the catching game was on! Sarah joined in the fun with a great deep catch on second, however Ellice chose the wrong ball to attempt to catch running off the field and robbing a spectator of a possible game ball souvenir. Jess came in to pitch and bobby jumped into catcher, and the next couple of innings were dead locked.

The batting seemed to improve out of sight as well. Sarah continued her bat and run for your life tactic seeing her get on bag with an error and a walk! Tenielle murdered a ball deep into centerfield and it looked as if it was going to go all the way, the crowd was on their feet… but somehow the five foot nothing CF had a crazy fast backward running style and managed to ice cream cone the ball. To be fair, it was a great catch. All the excitement however came in the bottom of the seventh, with uwa 2 runs down. Tenielle was on bag and coach jess was up to bat. Her eyes turned black, she wound up, and picked the perfect pitch! The ball went soaring, flying higher than an eagle, with wind beneath its wings, and jess got the runner home and made it to three. Controversy struck however when the spectators were telling her to run home yet the team was telling her to stop. Taking the smarter option she remained on three, but hey getting hosed down once in a while could be worth it. Trace came up to bat… and then made her way back to the dug out. And it was all up to Bobby, no pressure at all, 2 down, one run needed to draw the game. She did her team proud with a great fly line drive to right field. Unfortunately the right field had a killer arm and made the out on one, preventing the run home to count.

UWA finished the game well, but need to work on getting pumped from the get go to put them selves in finals contention. The final score was 2 runs to 1.
